A traditional sauna heats the room itself with an electric or wood-burning stove and a bed of rocks, rather than warming your body directly the way an infrared panel does. That’s the source of both its appeal — higher heat, real steam (löyly), the experience most people picture when they hear “sauna” — and its bigger installation lift compared to a plug-and-play infrared cabin.
Electric vs. wood-fired: the core decision
Electric heaters are simpler to install and control — a digital timer, a delayed-start option, consistent heat with no fuel to manage. The tradeoff is electrical: most residential electric heaters in the 6-8kW range require a dedicated, hardwired 240V circuit, which almost always means hiring an electrician.
Wood-fired stoves need no electrical hookup at all, which makes them a genuine option for a fully off-grid outdoor cabin. In exchange, you’re managing fuel, tending a fire, and need proper chimney clearance and, in most jurisdictions, adherence to local building codes for flue installation. They’re also slower to reach temperature and require more hands-on attention during a session.
Neither is objectively better — it’s a tradeoff between electrical installation cost and ongoing fuel/maintenance effort.
Heater sizing: matching output to cabin volume
Heater output needs to match the cabin’s cubic footage, and manufacturers publish a rated volume range for each heater size (commonly expressed in cubic feet). An undersized heater struggles to reach and hold temperature, especially with the door opening and closing during use; an oversized heater wastes energy and can make the cabin uncomfortably intense. Always check the manufacturer’s cabin-volume rating for a specific heater rather than assuming bigger is safer — match it to your actual interior dimensions.
Insulation, ventilation, and the rock bed
Traditional cabins run hotter and more humid than infrared units, so a proper vapor barrier behind the interior paneling and adequate ventilation matter more here — poor ventilation leads to uneven heat and excess moisture buildup in the walls over time. The rock tray also deserves attention: a generous, well-built rock bed is what produces good löyly (the burst of steam from ladling water onto hot rocks) — an undersized rock tray is a common corner cut on lower-end kits.
Indoor vs. outdoor installation
Indoor installations need to account for a hardwired 240V circuit in most cases, proper ventilation to a exterior wall or vent, and moisture-tolerant surrounding materials. Outdoor cabins (including barrel-style saunas) need weatherproof construction and, for electric models, exterior-rated wiring runs to the unit — and if you’re considering a wood-fired stove, outdoor installation sidesteps most flue and building-code complications that come with running one indoors.
What “heater sold separately” actually means for your budget
Some traditional sauna cabins — particularly barrel-style outdoor models — are sold as a cabin shell only, with the heater (electric or wood-fired) as a separate purchase. This isn’t a hidden fee, but it does mean the cabin’s sticker price isn’t your total cost. Always check whether a listing includes the heater before comparing prices across two different traditional sauna cabins.

“Limited lifetime warranty” appears on both cabin structures and heaters in this category, but the two are often covered separately and for different lengths — a lifetime structural warranty paired with a 1-to-5-year, component-based heater warranty is common.
